Doctor's Profile

Dr. Héctor Nuila is a well-respected orthopedic surgeon specializing in treatment of all aspects of bone and joint deterioration. He has been in private practice as the medical director of Ortotal since 2001. It is a multi-disciplinary orthopedic clinic offering all the services that a patient needs to actively participate in their own treatment plan, to reach full 100% recovery, and beyond.

Dr. Nuila had been the trusted surgeon for countless patients: from children with congenital defects to high-performance professional athletes, to older people with natural deterioration. He has worked with national football teams in all categories, the gymnastics federation, national ballet school, triathlon organizers, and other major sports teams. Foreign patients come from Europe and the United States, and closer to home, from Mexico and Belize, among many others, because they trust his skills and his ethics.

Although he performs about 400 orthopedic surgeries per year, Dr. Nuila says that 95% of his patients can be treated with physical therapy, rehabilitation, infiltrations or medications, thus avoiding invasive surgeries. And, nearly 50% arrive on weekends with emergency sports injuries. When patients arrive to his office with pain in their back, joints or bones, or recent sports injuries, Dr. Nuila draws from the skills and talent from over 20 years of experience to restore their comfort and mobility, just the way it used to be.

Knee arthroscopy and ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) repair are both minimally-invasive procedures, performed through two small puncture holes. Through the lens of the scope, the surgeon can see inside the knee and establish a diagnosis, to reconstruct the connective tissues, or determine a different treatment plan.

It is important to Dr. Nuila to try non-invasive methods first before considering surgery, resorting to it only when it’s absolutely necessary. If the patient is doubtful or unsure of having the operation done, Dr. Nuila will postpone it until the patient is completely informed and confident regarding the methods, outcome, risks and expectations.

The keyword before and after a total joint replacement is trust. Patients are more confident and positive about their recovery when they have physical therapy, pain management, vestibular therapy and nutritional guidance in a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation program. Ortotal administration even manages processing of insurance forms so that the patient has no stress during recovery. The doctors and therapists of Ortotal treat every patient with warm personal attention and a sincere devotion to their satisfaction and results.

Demanding the finest world-class quality technology and care for his patients, Dr. Nuila has his own anesthesiologist who has been working together with him for many years. The doctor’s own superior-quality German surgical instruments are replaced every few years to keep up with the latest generation technology available.

Dr. Nuila is a master in the therapeutic application of plasma-rich platelets and stem cells, for fast regeneration of bones, muscles and connective tissues. These cells are extracted from the patient’s own blood and bone marrow, enhanced in the lab, and then reintroduced to the injury site, to reduce fracture recovery time and enhance restoration of muscular, ligamentous or tendinous injury.

Dr. Nuila’s medical practice is devoted to scientific excellence, state of the art technology and evidence-based medicine, however, his artistic talent and passion for sports participation also contribute to the success of each person who is fortunate enough to be under his care.

Dr. Nuila recognizes the importance of biotechnology in the form of stem cells and plasma-rich platelets to give his patients fast and successful healing results, and Ortotal offers a specialized laboratory in the clinic to offer these services. He continues to research up to date breakthroughs and advances in both applications.

I first heard about Dr. Nuila through Olympic Committee contacts. After our first meeting and hearing about his training and experience, I felt very comfortable with Dr. Nuila. The post-operative service at Hospital Multimédica was first rate. After months of physical therapy, done on my own using Dr. Nuila’s famous exercise diagrams, my shoulder was as good as new. I am so very satisfied with the results of the operation.

Being an Olympic cycle Sailing athlete fighting to qualify for the Panamerican Games Guadalajara 2011, a rotator cuff injury represented a giant obstacle to overcome. However, Dr. Nuila carefully analyzed my situation after ordering imaging studies. He proposed that the best option, considering recovery time and my sporting ambitions, would be to surgically correct the rotator cuff. Surgery went marvelous, I qualified to the PanAm’s and currently, my previously injured shoulder has become the strongest one. To this day, I remain confident in Dr. Nuila’s medical care.

Charity, Public Service, Donations

Public service and caring for the less fortunate is a way of life in the Latin culture

Dr. Nuila has a program called “Social Responsibility” that offers check-ups, procedures, and therapy to patients in small rural communities far from the city. In many cases, Dr. Nuila donates surgical care to Guatemalans without the resources to pay for normal medical expenses.

Patient Success Stories

Every patient has different circumstances and expectations. We will tell you about an interesting and unusual case that the doctor was able to turn around with unexpectedly outstanding results

In the case of the gentleman from Colombia, he had operations on his leg in three other countries, but the injury still refused to heal. After more suffering and disability, the patient came to Dr. Nuila for a fourth attempt to correct his injury. When Dr. Nuila reconstructed the femur (thigh bone from hips to knees), the patient was amazed that the pain was gone, the operation was a success, and his leg was finally on the way back to complete health.
