Dr. Alvaro Collía (ko-YEE-ah) has specialized in traumatology, orthopedics, shoulder and knee arthroscopy, foot surgery, and sports medicine in Guatemala City since 2002. His clinic is located in the prestigious and modern Hospital Multimedica. Since 2011, he has been researching both minimally invasive surgery methods and stem cell therapies in order to offer his patients the most cutting-edge medical treatments available.
In his practice, Dr. Collía normally treats 300-350 cases of shoulder, hip and knee problems per month and about 20 total hip and knee replacements every month with nearly 100% successful results and patient satisfaction. He also has seen great success with correcting shoulder instability through arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery.
Sometimes the exact injury can be diagnosed by x-ray imaging, or more complicated cases may require MRI diagnostics. Both are available at the Multimedica building, with the latest technology and results delivered the same day.
The doctor explains that the reason that he uses Biomet joint implants is that they have been on the market for at least 25 years and has a durability rate of over 95%. It is the same implant that is used in major private hospitals in the United States also.“We haven’t used the old metal-on-metal hip implants in several years. Not only are they expensive, but there have been many long-term problems discovered about them.”
Dr. Collía speaks English and Spanish fluently so that he can completely understand the history, circumstances and expectations of his patients. Under his care, patients are treated with respect and compassion, like a trusted friend or family member.

What a charming, warm and wonderful man Dr. Collía is. And even more so now that he has told us that an operation is not necessary. We will wait a month to see how Rene is healing, and it will be a pleasure to visit with him again.

I dislocated my left elbow while in Florida. The ER doctor took x-rays and pointed to a tiny fracture. The specialist said it was a simple dislocation and to take the cast off in 7-10 days. So I did, and started therapy, but the fracture and tissues were not healed properly, so therapy made it only worse.
When I came to see Dr. Alvaro Collia, had a swollen elbow and could not feel my two fingers as the tissues were pressing the nerves. Dr Collia saved my elbow. He is highly professional, educated in Guatemala and abroad, fluent in English. His advice was impeccable, holistic and prompt. He was extremely patient in responding to tons of the questions that I had as I progressed with recovering over the few months, but at the same time firm, calming, reassuring and kind. Warm recommendations to anyone needing this type of service.

I had terrible shooting pains from my hip to my feet for several months, but all the doctors I saw in Florida could never give me a firm diagnosis or any relief. On vacation in Guatemala, my daughter insisted that I should consult with Dr. Collia for a second opinion, or at least, to give me a proper diagnosis. Well, he did that and so much more, quickly and accurately. He knew exactly what to look for, where and how, with precision and confidence.
Even better, we were able to schedule a procedure at a beautiful modern hospital only two days later. The infiltration was a total success and I have had no pain at all since then – like a miracle. I’m so grateful to Dr. Collia for his compassion, honesty, and fast attention to let me walk again, pain-free.
